Climate Adaptation and Clean Energy

In 2019, we hired a Climate Action Coordinator to support and advocate for energy efficiency, clean energy and climate change adaptation projects within Klemtu.

To date, we have had success with retrofitting homes for heating loss, this project is ongoing. A future project that is close to beginning is the Kitasoo Rain Water Project. We will be utilizing large bins we received from Transport Canada in Port Hardy, BC for rain collection. This water will be non-potable and will be used for emergencies in the summer when we have extended drought conditions.

Klemtu owns and operates their own Hydro Electric Facility that provides clean energy to the community. It has been in operation since the 1970’s. To offset the hydro plant, we are also searching for alternative clean energy options.

The nation has adopted recycling and composting program. These drastically reduce the amount of waste that goes into the landfill.

The Kitasoo Xai’xais is committed to being eco-friendly and continuing to lower our Greenhouse Gas Emissions where possible.

Any questions about future, past or present projects, please contact the Climate Action Coordinator at the Kitasoo Xai’xais Stewardship Office.
