Kitasoo Forestry Company

Who We Are

Kitasoo Forest Company is 100% owned by the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation and has been operating since 1996. Beginning in 2013, Kitasoo Forest Company and Western Forest Products developed a joint business venture to maximize the benefits from the timber in Kitasoo Xai’xais Territory. Kitasoo Xai’xais are working to control as much of the forest in Kitasoo Xai’xais territory as possible for the benefit of the community. Our goals are to develop jobs and economic opportunities for Klemtu and to protect the environment and Kitasoo Xai’xais culture. To accomplish these goals, over 50% of the territory is protected from timber harvesting and development, and all timber harvesting operations that are undertaken are guided by Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM).

Ecosystem-Based Management

Over half of Kitasoo Xai’xais territory is protected from forestry operations. In the areas that are open to timber harvesting, we are committed to ensuring that operations respect and protect Kitasoo Xai’xais culture, wildlife, and the natural environment. To this end, cultural features such as culturally modified trees are protected, as are bear dens and class I grizzly bear habitats. Visual quality – the visibility of cut to the public – is also carefully considered.
