Job Description

Working with the Kitasoo Xai’xais Stewardship Authority, the field technician will assist the research program with all aspects of field work. The field technician may help with bear research, salmon research, bird surveys, catch monitoring, archaeological surveys, and wildlife coexistence education. A keen attention to detail is required for the data recording portion of this position.

 

This position is designed to support capacity building and will include ample training opportunities (First Aid, boat operation, piloting drones, canoe skills, bear safety etc.) and direct support from mentors on the Stewardship team. The exact job duties of this position can be tailored based on the field technician’s interests.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

This work will be based primarily outside throughout Kitasoo Xai’xais territory. The work may include long days in potentially poor weather conditions. The field technician needs to be confident traveling on boats and working in high bear density areas. Reasonable physical conditioning is required for this position, as hiking may be involved. Some office/data work will also be required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Learning and conducting fisheries surveys
  • Learning and conducting wildlife surveys
  • Learning and conducting archeological surveys
  • Supporting the wildlife coexistence program in Klemtu
  • Data recording and basic analysis
  • Pre and post-field season organizational duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills

Current resident of Klemtu or the desire to be a resident. Housing is not provided.  If candidates are equally qualified, preference will be given to Kitasoo Xai’xais members.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE (OR INTEREST IN LEARNING)

  • PCOC or SVOP – Pleasure Craft Operator’s Certificate or Small Vessel Operator Proficiency operating boats
  • ROC-M – Radio Operators Certificate – Marine
  • Wilderness First Aid training
  • Bear safety training
  • Comfortable working on boats
  • Familiarity with watersheds throughout Kitasoo Xai’xais territory
  • Comfortable working in bear country
  • Moderate physical conditioning for long days and hiking
  • Adaptable to a flexible schedule
