KITASOO BAND COUNCIL HOSTS: COLLABORATIVE PROCESS ON THE INDIAN REGISTRATION, BAND MEMBERSHIP AND FIRST NATIONS CITIZENSHIP

On behalf of Kitasoo Band Council, please join us and come out and learn about the changes to the Indian Act and how they affect you, your family and your community.

Guest Presenter of the Federal Government (Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada) is consulting with First Nations, individuals and organizations on issues related to Indian Registration, Band Membership, and First Nation Citizenship.

An overview of Bill S-3, Bill S-3 is an Act to amend the Indian Act in response to the Superior Court of Quebec decision in Descheneaux v. Canada and received Royal Assent on December 12, 2017. This affects Indian Registration, Band Membership and First Nations Citizenship.

DISCUSSION TOPICS
– Implementation of the removal of the 1951 cut-off from the Indian Act
– Remaining inequities related to Indian Registration and band membership under the Indian Act
– First Nations exclusive responsibility for determining membership/citizenship moving beyond the Indian Act
