Summary of duties: Under the Supervision of the Kitasoo XaiXais Stewardship
Director or Designate, this is a short-term contract position will assist in interview-based
research collecting fisher knowledge of groundfish. The research is coordinated by The
Central Coast Indigenous Resource Alliance (CCIRA) and the Kitasoo/Xai’xais
Stewardship Authority Office. The Central Coast Indigenous Resource Alliance (CCIRA)
was established by the Kitasoo/Xai’xais, Heiltsuk, Nuxalk, and Wuikinuxv Nations to
coordinate technical support for fishery management and marine spatial planning.
CCIRA is governed by the Nations and the work being undertaken is to help advance
the resource management needs of the community. The results of the work will be used
only as approved by the Nation’s Stewardship office.
The successful applicant will:
1) Arrange and coordinate an initial set of interviews to be conducted in Klemtu with
Kitasoo/Xai’xais fishers experienced in targeting groundfish (halibut, lingcod, red
snapper, and rockcod). These initial interviews are to be arranged ahead of time
to be conducted between February 18 and 21, 2020.
2) During February 18-21, 2020, work with CCIRA’s Science Coordinator (Alejandro
Frid) in conducting the interviews, thereby learning the methodology. During this
period the research community coordinator will strive to arrange additional
3) After February 21, 2020, conduct additional interviews following the established
methodology, and report results to CCIRA’s science coordinator.
 Knows people in the community and can directly contact food fishers ahead of
time to arrange for their potential participation in the interviews;
 Is a good communicator;
 Has good reading and writing skills and some basic computer skills;
 Will communicate with Supervisor or Designate via email before and after
Science Coordinator’s visit about matters related to the project, as often as
 Is self-motivated and enthusiastic about working with fisher knowledge to
improve fishery management led by his/her community.
Duration and Hours: This short-term contract is for a minimum of 48 hours of work to
be conducted during the period of February 1 to March 31, 2020. (Additional hours to be
conducted during the same period are possible, depending on the progress of the
Wage: The Contractor will receive $25 CAD/hour and will be paid upon submission of a
monthly invoice recording hours worked and interviews done followed by the approval of
that invoice. Payments of fees made to the Contractor under this Contract shall not
exceed $1,200, unless approved otherwise by Supervisor or Designate. The final
invoice must be received by March 31, 2020.
