The Kitasoo/Xai’xais Emergency Medical Responder Team (EMRs) provides support to extend the capabilities of the Klemtu Health Centre. Certified as Paramedics under guidelines established by the Paramedic Association of Canada, the team has completed an 80 hour course of instruction as well as having received annual refresher and upgrade training. Under the proud and watchful eye of 40 year EMS experienced Team Trainer Doug House, the Kitasoo Xai’xais EMRs provide a scope of care over and above conventional first aid attendants. In the field, they are skilled in patient assessment and stabilization and transport as required, plus medical protocols such as cardiac (including defibrillation and chest pain protocols), respiratory arrest and distress, diabetic, seizures, pain control/analgesia and more. They use assessment tools such as stethoscope auscultation, non-invasive blood pressure and blood glucose levels. To ensure effective communications, the EMRs are each equipped with a state-of-the-art mobile radio, coordinated to a base station at the Health Centre and to the Nurse on-call after hours.
Klemtu is not currently equipped with an Ambulance. Once certification and licensing are acquired by volunteers we will then expand to provide Ambulance service. Presently, the EMR’s are summoned by the Nurse on-call. If you have emergency, call 250-839-1221.
If you have emergency after clinic hours you must call the nurse on call and if required the nurses will contact the EMR via EMR Radio. Please note after hours you call the clinic main line at 250-839-1221; you will hear recording and the call will transfer to the nurse on-call.
